If you have been postponing your dental check up or treatment because of the below reasons,Well,it is time you fix an appointment with a dentist. Remember, taking care of the tooth as much as you take care of yourself reflects on your total physical well-being.
Tooth extraction affects Eyesight
Well,if you had told me this while I was studying in my 5th grade,it would have sound logical, but not anymore. There is no way that tooth has any connection with Eye sight,it is just a weird imagination.
Head Bath after Extraction
I come across few old age patients who keep asking this common question, Can I take head bath after extraction? ,the answer is YES! Dentists always prescribe anti biotic and pain killer after extraction, and there is no need to worry about taking head bath after extraction.
Scaling makes the tooth thin
Now this is a modern day myth. Scaling or teeth cleaning is done when there is lot of plaque and calculus deposits are present on the teeth. Plaque is usually soft deposit, whereas calculus is hard deposit, someone somewhere might have mistook calculus for tooth and that is why I’m talking about this today. Scaling or Teeth cleaning is done with Ultra Sonic machine.
Ultra Sonic basically works on vibrating mechanism so there is absolutely no chance that tooth is damaged while Scaling / teeth cleaning. When large amount of deposits are removed, you may have the feeling that teeth have become thinner, but this will last only for a short while.
A little Bleeding while Brushing is normal
Everyone must have seen some bleeding while brushing at one point of time. Remember, gums bleed when there is problem in the gums, the most common problem is deposits of plaque and calculus. Plaque and food debris will cause the gums to swell and bleed.
No! Bleeding on brushing is not normal. If gum bleeding persists, a professional dental cleaning may be required. Visit your dentist if you such problem, otherwise you are on the journey to lose your teeth.
Root Canal treatment is done when tooth hurts
Root Canal treatment is done to save the tooth. The sooner it is done, the more tooth structure is preserved and as a result, the outcome of the treatment is more predictable. An infected, painful tooth takes longer time to heal.
Milk Teeth fall off naturally-Saving is not Important
This myth is every mother’s favourite question. It is true that Milk teeth fall off naturally, but there is a certain timeline for them. If the milk teeth stay longer than they should, it will affect the growth and positioning of the permanent teeth.
Milk teeth usually fall between 6 and 12 years of age. Also, Premature loss of milk teeth will reduce the size of the jaw, hampering its growth. This may also lead to greater chances of crowding of the upcoming permanent teeth.
Premature loss of anterior teeth will hamper the development of articulated speech.
Tooth Straightening is only for Children
Teeth can be straightened at any age. Most adults are concerned about their appearance while treatment is on.Nowadays, more adults are wearing braces than the kids.
There are newer treatment modalities like ceramic and lingual braces as well as invisible aligners that make the braces virtually invisible.
Dental Treatment during Pregnancy
Keeping good oral health and hygiene during pregnancy is very important. With hormonal changes, gum diseases are more likely, if teeth are not cleaned properly.
The second trimester is considered to be safer for treatment. Ultrasonic scaling and filling of decayed teeth can be done; X-rays are made only in absolutely necessary cases, after draping and apron.
Antibiotics are to be avoided during the entire term of pregnancy. The dentist should be informed of pregnancy at the time of consultation.
Whitening weakens Teeth
When done at the dentist’s office or at home as per the dentist’s instructions, whitening does not cause any damage to the teeth.
Some patients may have short-term tooth sensitivity that usually gets abated with the application of a desensitizing fluoridated varnish, after the treatment.
Dental Treatment done once, is for life
I’m sure that nothing in this world is maintenance free, and dental treatment is no exception. Follow up visits are need to ensure that everything in is order. Generally, six-month follow-up visits are recommended to monitor the progress and outcome of the procedures.
Dental Treatment is painful
Regular follow-up visits and timely intervention can lead to painless comfortable dental treatment.
